Our name references our strong belief in the important benefits of open source software solutions for non-profits, including cost, search engine optimization, Web 2.0 functionality, easy content authoring, frequent version updates and stability.

NPOpen’s principals have deep experience advising interactive non-profit clients on website strategy, design, marketing and technology. We design engaging, usable high-impact websites that attract large, growing audiences. For Environmental Law & Policy Center (ELPC), we have built three websites, designed and implemented e-newsletter products and developed multi-media solutions including online video and webinars. Other nonprofit clients include Friends of the Parks, Life by Design Northwest, the Community Media Workshop, Valerie Denney Communications and NORBIC.
In the for-profit sector, our principals have played leadership roles developing and leading numerous successful websites, including Newser.com, Arthur Andersen KnowledgeSpace and FluentMedia, a Tribune Media Services content syndication service. Current projects nearing completion include the website of Friends of the Parks and ELPC’s farmenergy.org. We also have extensive experience with new product design and implementation with major media companies, including the Chicago Sun-Times, Tribune Media Services, Crain Communications and Turnstile Publishing.

Mark Miller
Mark is the principal and founder of NPOpen.org Mark is a journalist and consultant with expertise in multimedia and web design. He has designed and launched numerous open source websites for non-profit organizations, including Globalwarmingsolutions.org, the Environmental Law & Policy Center, Clean Cars Illinois, the Iowa Global Warming Campaign, and Friends of the Parks. He also has worked as strategic advice to Life by Design Northwest and Valerie Denny Communications, a public relations and marketing firm specializing in public policy and issues management. He also serves as a consultant to the Chicago-based Community Media Workshop.
Mark is president of 50+Digital LLC, a multimedia consulting and publishing company dedicated to serving the information needs of the Baby Boom generation. As a journalist, he specializes in the areas of aging, retirement, business and economic news, and writes the weekly column Retire Smart, which appears in newspapers around the U.S. and is syndicated by Tribune Media Services. He also edits and publishes two websites focused on the 50+ market –RetirementRevised.com and 50plusdigital.com. Mark was the founding editor of Satisfaction, a groundbreaking lifestyle magazine and companion Web site addressing the concerns and interests of the Baby Boomer generation, and has written extensively on Boomer business, marketing and economic trends for newspapers, magazines and Web sites. He is the former editor of Crain’s Chicago Business and Sunday editor of the Chicago Sun-Times, and wrote op-ed columns for both publications on business and economic affairs.
Mike Wu
Mike is the founder of Oxid8 Technologies LLC, a full service web-consulting firm that he started in 2002. Mike has spent the last 12 years in the technology industry holding various software development and product management roles. Prior to founding Oxid8, Mike was the Director of Product for Newser, an online news aggregation website. He was responsible for conceptualizing the vision and launching Newser, which today averages 500,000 visitors a month. Prior to Newser, Mike has held senior product management roles at HighBeam Research, WebEx Communications and Ensim Corporation. In 1998, Mike created and launched Hoopscity.com, one of the first online fantasy basketball games played over the web with thousands of users. The game was licensed to the American Basketball Association in 2000.
Jerry Hutchinson
Jerry is a highly regarded Chicago designer whose capabilities include designing and producing identity programs, marketing materials, advertisements and web sites. He heads his own design firm, Hutchinson Associates. His recent design projects with 50+Digital include elpc.org, globalwarmingsolutions.org and iowaglobalwarming.org, and a new Friends of the Parks website is scheduled to launch shortly. Other recent projects include annual reports, marketing brochures, identity programs, and/or web sites for Illinois State Medical Society, K.I.D.S.S. for Kids (Kindness is Doing Something Special for Kids, an auxiliary of Children’s Memorial Hospital), International Women Associates, Residential Properties Trust, Cardinal Growth, ChicagoBusiness.com, Illinois Association of Ophthalmology, Legat Architects, Belden Incorporated, NORBIC and North American Insurance.
